Queens Village youth band ends 20-yr. run

For more than 20 years the Queens Village Youth Marching Band was an institution, part of the fabric and vitality of southeast Queens. It played at Thanksgiving Day parades, Memorial Day events and at hospitals. But in May, the music stopped.

There were not enough adults to help out, said Harvey Moder, who started the band in 1980 and ran it out of his home. There were plenty of youthful participants, but parents did not want to help shuttle children back and forth from events and practices, he said.
