105th Pct. makes arrest in 2-month burglary spree

By Adam Kramer

The residents of Glen Oaks and Floral Park can breathe a little easier over the holiday season after a joint effort by the 105th Precinct and other law enforcement units led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man in a rash of burglaries that had plagued the community for two months.

Through the efforts of the Community Policing Unit under the leadership of Joe Campanella, the 105th Detective Squad, the Anti-Crime Unit and the Street Narcotics Enforcement Unit, the police apprehended Michael Newton, who was arrested for committing 19 burglaries over the past couple of months.

Newton confessed to the burglaries after being interrogated by Detective Michael Mormino of the 105th Precinct. He was arrested for second-degree burglary and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted, said Mary de Bourbon, spokeswoman for the Queens district attorney.

Mormino said Newton, 27, was arrested at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 22 on charges of petty larceny for allegedly shoplifting merchandise at the Glen Oaks Mall's Big Kmart by Police Officer Michael Romano.

Newton, a former Martin Van Buren High School student who did not graduate, is unemployed and rents a room at 86-39 258th St. in Floral Park.

Mormino said Newton was brought into the Detective Squad at 3 p.m. for a routine debriefing. He said the interrogation provides the detective squad with the opportunity to question the alleged perpetrator about other crimes in the area.
