Flushing group

Members of the Flushing-based Network for Intergroup Harmony hope Queens residents will attend a special service celebrating Rev. Martin Luther King and examining how his civil rights teachings can be integrated into 21st century society on his birthday.

The Network was founded by City Councilwoman Julia Harrison (D-Flushing) in 1987 following the notorious racial incident in Howard Beach that led to the death of a black man at the hands of a group of young white men. The intent of the group is to promote harmony, cooperation and understanding among the various religious, racial, ethnic and cultural groups in Queens, the most diverse county in the United States and perhaps the world.

Each year the Network, composed of Queens religious and secular leaders, sponsors two major events
