Woman hurt in crash at Flushing intersection

By Bryan Schwartzman

A two-car accident left a woman injured and a street light down Sunday at the intersection of 33rd Avenue and 146th Street in Flushing, which residents contend is used as a speedway by cars and trucks.

The woman was taken to a local hospital for examination after the van her husband was driving collided with another vehicle at about 4 p.m. Police at the scene said they did not believe her injury was serious.

The car was traveling south on 146th Street and the van was heading west on 33rd Street when they collided in the intersection, causing the van to lose control and slam into the pole. The driver of the van, Abdul Rahimi, said he was shaken up and just hoping his wife was OK.

Rahimi said the other vehicle was too far out in front of the stop sign for him to avoid hitting. The driver of the car, who declined to give her name, said the van was speeding.

Several residents said the intersection has been plagued with accidents, and while properties and vehicles have been severely damaged, no one has been seriously hurt yet.

The streetlight across the street was missing and had been taken down last week following a similar accident, where the pole had been knocked down as the result of a collision.

Agatha DePasquale was cleaning the shattered windshield glass from her sidewalk when she pointed to a damaged brick wall on her property, which was hit by an out-of-control vehicle several months ago.
