Prep’s Begy named CHSHA’s Most Valuable Defenseman

By Dylan Butler

Mike Begy's high school hockey career did not end the way he would have liked. The St. Francis Prep captain and his Terriers were swept in a best-of-three series semifinal series by Queens rival Molloy.

With tears flowing down his face, Begy was the last player to leave the ice that night as the realization that his high school hockey career was over hit the Middle Village native hard.

But Begy did receive some pleasant, yet unexpected news, last week when he was named the Most Valuable Defenseman of the Catholic High School Hockey League's 'B' division. He was also voted to the 'B' division's First Team by the league's coaches.

“I was totally shocked,” Begy said. “[Xavier's Keith] Salbeck is a great defenseman, I thought he had it for sure. It didn't even cross my mind, but it is a great honor to have.”

Molloy junior forward John DiGregorio was also selected to the 'B' Division First Team. The Rego Park native had 29 goals and 21 assists for the Stanners, who fell to St. Edmund's in the final, two games to one.

“At first I didn't know, then some of my teammates told me,” DiGregorio said. “It was a pleasant surprise, another thing to put down for colleges.”

Christ the King had two players on the 'B' division Second Team. Forward Mike Olech and senior goaltender Chris Kalyviotis join Molloy's Alex Kalaf on the second team.

St. Francis Prep junior Adam Discepolo and McClancy's John Mascetti were 'B' division honorable mentions.

In 'AA', seniors Sean O'Neill and Vic DiRico from Holy Cross were honorable mentions.
