SJU’s McGerry selected in fourth round by A’s

For Kevin McGerry, the waiting is finally over. The St. John's junior pitcher ended days of anxiety when he received the call Monday that he was selected in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft. The Oakland A's picked the righty hurler as the 120th selection overall.

“It feels good,” McGerry said from his home in Philadelphia. “It's over and I'm really hoping a good situation can come out of it. I hadn't spoken to them personally, and that happened when the (San Francisco) Giants drafted me in high school, but it's a great feeling. I'm on cloud nine.”

Ironically, McGerry was also picked in the fourth round after his senior year at Philadelphia's Father Judge High School, but he opted to go to St. John's instead of signing out of high school

While there was never a question McGerry would get drafted, what round he would be selected in is what concerned him. Would he be selected on the basis of the first half of his season, when McGerry jumped out to a great start. Or would it be the second half of the year, when McGerry and the Red Storm struggled.
