Two pipe bombs detonated in Woodhaven

By Michelle Han

The first bomb was placed under a 1990 Honda Civic parked at 93rd Street and 95th Avenue near a junior high school and exploded at about 2 a.m. Thursday, police said. It was not reported to police until later that day.

The second bomb exploded nearly 20 hours later just before 11 p.m. Thursday under a car at 81st Street and 97th Avenue, police said.

Although there were no injuries in either explosion, the bombs did some damage to both automobiles.

Deputy Inspector Michael Coan, the commanding officer of the 102nd Precinct, said the bombs most likely were constructed by the same person. He said the culprit must have had some knowledge of bomb-making but probably was not looking to injure a specific person.
