Bellerose cop shoots self at academy

By Adam Kramer

Officer Joseph Dini, 34, of Bellerose was in critical condition at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan after an apparent suicide attempt, said Police Office Theresa Farello, an NYPD spokeswoman.

Farello said Dini shot himself in the neck about 2 p.m. Friday in what appeared to be a suicide attempt. His weapon was found on the floor beside him, she said. The incident was still under investigation, she said.

Newsday reported Dini, who was stationed at the academy on East 20th Street in Manhattan, was operating the audio equipment during a presentation on behavioral science to 200 recruits by Lt. Nellie Torres.

Torres told investigators she heard a loud booming sound coming from the room Dini was in and thought it was heavy equipment falling.

When she went to check on him, she found the police officer lying in a pool of blood with a bullet hole in his neck. Dini
