York men best Baruch, 3-0

Led by a pair of Marc Meo goals, the York men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the CUNY tournament with a 3-0 win over Baruch Saturday at York. The fourth-seeded Cardinals face No. 1 City College in a game scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at CCNY.

The winner takes on either Medgar Evers or John Jay in the CUNY final Sunday at 1 p.m. at CCNY. The CUNY champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Meo, a native of Haiti, put York (7-6-2, 4-2-2) on the board in the 23rd minute on a through ball from Mark James. He found the net again in the 72nd minute on a cross from Rene Nova for his 12th goal of the year. Former Franklin K. Lane standout Alex Proano netted the other Cardinal goal when his corner kick went untouched into the net.

Freshman keeper Stephane Koutoud earned his fifth shutout of the year, lowering his league-leading goals against average to 0.92.

CCNY (11-3-1, 8-0) advanced to the semifinal with a 10-0 rout over eighth-seeded College of Staten Island. Queens native Tamark Bailey scored two goals in the win.

 

Kurasaki named Big East Rookie of the Week

St. John's volleyball freshman Robyn Kurasaki earned her third Big East rookie of the week honor after breaking her own school record with 83 assists in the Red Storm's dramatic five-game victory over Syracuse Sunday at Alumni Hall.

For the week, the native of Millani, Hawaii racked up 142 assists, 22 digs, three aces and three blocks in a 2-1 week for St. John's.

 

Women's Volleyball

St. John's 8-15-15-12-15, Syracuse 15-13-11-15-11. Senior Amanda Berg had a career-high 24 kills, senior Olga Roudovski had a match-high 31 kills and senior Aleeza Miller also notched a career-high 22 kills to spark the Red Storm (22-7, 5-3 Big East) Sunday at Alumni Hall.

Notre Dame 15-15-15, St. John's 0-9-10. Christi Griton and Marcie Bomhack combined for 33 kills to lead No. 21 Notre Dame (17-5, 7-0) to a three-game sweep of St. John's at Alumni Hall Saturday.

Roudovski led the Red Storm with 11 kills, while Berg added 10. St. John's hopes to break a fourth-place tie with Georgetown Sunday when the Red Storm travel to Washington, D.C. for a 5 p.m. match,

Queens College 6-12-15-15-15, New York Tech 15-15-12-12-9. Noelia Castillo had 32 kills and 23 digs, Natasha Arthurton had 24 kills and 27 digs, while Annie Williams had 76 assists to lead the Knights (14-9).

 

Scharf brothers lead SJU at Army Invitational

No. 1 seed Erik Scharf from St. John's defeated second-seeded Akshay Jagdale of Rutgers, 5-6, 6-2, 6-4, to win the Flight A singles title at the West Point Invitational Saturday.

Brian Scharf, the second-seed in B singles topped Gaurav Kumar of Temple, 5-6, 6-2, 6-3, for the Flight B crown.

 

Women's Tennis

Manhattan 6, St. John's 0. Nanarhi Chavez-Geller beat St. John's Cornia Cetateanu in first singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). The Red Storm finished the fall season 0-4.

 

St. John's women place 11th , men 14th.

at Big East Cross Country championships

Dinah Mensah was the top finisher for the women, placing 47th overall in 18:40, while teammate Danielle Eckartz from Malba finished 58th in 19:07. Lynn Medjuk finished just behind Eckartz in 59th in 19:46, Saturday at Boston College.

On the men's side, Marc Crosswell led the charge, finishing 70th in 26:23. Matt Cotter placed 73rd (26:32), while Greg Mason finished 78th in 26:45 for the Red Storm.
