Central Library honors Martin Luther King’s life

The Saturday, Jan. 13, afternoon events will be in the Youth Services Division of the Central Library, 89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica. Families and children of all ages are welcome, admission is free.

The documentary film, “Black Americans of Achievement – Martin Luther King, Jr.,” will be screened at 1 p.m. Teacher Donna Libert-Young will lead a discussion and workshop following the video.

At 2 p.m., actress, storyteller, and teacher Joanna Featherstone performs “Hold Fast to Dreams,” which brings new meaning to the works of Phyllis Wheatley, Paul Laurence Dunbar, James Wheldon Johnson and Langston Hughes.

At 3 p.m., PS 95's Eastwood International Children's Choir will perform a musical tribute to the civil rights leader, “Somebody Told Me About Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Participants who took part in the Queen's Library's annual writing project will conclude the afternoon's events. They were asked to share a conversation or a book with an adult who remembers when King was alive, and then write a letter to King, telling him about themselves and their hopes and concerns for the future.

All attendees will be awarded certificates, and refreshments will be served.
