A year ago St. Luke’s was eliminated from the playoffs by a powerful Our Lady of Hope team in the second to last game of the season. This year, St. Luke’s is determined to make the playoffs again.

On opening day against Our Lady of Hope, Big Blue came out fired up and came away with the victory. The offense was led by table setters Thomas Dragisics (3-for-3, two stolen bases) and Frank Cesare (3-for-4, five RBIs). Damain Riviera contributed a big RBI with a sacrifice down the line. Smart base running by Joe Wick, Anthony Caizza and Marino Pignataro helped score a few more runs.

Outstanding defensive performances were provided by Harry Orfanos, Pat Cox and Anthony Salerno. Big Blue also received stellar pitching from Steven Puleo, who allowed only two earned runs in five innings. Relief specialist Steven Cunningham came in to put the nail in the coffin by striking out five of the six batters he faces.

St. Luke’s 5, St. Kevin’s 2. St. Luke’s came out a little flat, but came away victorious with a strong pitching performance from Steven Puleo, who went six innings, allowing two unearned runs. Flamethrower Steven Cunningham came in to strikeout the side in the seventh to earn his second save of the season.

The offense was led by Marino Pignataro, hitting a home run, and Pete DiPietrantonio’s 2-for-3 performance. Anthony Salerno got his first hit of the season and drove in the winning run.

The team played a great defensive game. This victory creates a showdown for first place with last year’s champion St. Gregory The Great.
