Queens gymnasts compete in state tourney

Several gymnasts from Nina’s Gymnastics Center in Maspeth competed at the Level 8 New York State Championships hosted by Gymnastics Sports Academy in Buffalo on May 5-6.

More than 50 gymnastic schools throughout the state sent 230 gymnasts ranging in age from 8 to 15 to the championships, where they competed for a chance to attend the Level 8 Regional Championships in Maine this weekend.

Kimberly Yee of Rego Park, a sixth-grader at Our Lady of Mercy School, took third place on the New York State Regional Team with an all-around score of 37.675 for the 8-12 age group division.

Diane Dohnert of Glendale, a junior at Cardozo High School, took first place on the New York State Regional Team with an all-around score of 37.000 for the 13 and over age group division.

In addition, the following gymnasts qualified for the New York State Regional All Stars Team:

Megan Aguiar of Woodside, freshman at Archbishop Molloy, 36.225;

Kristina Kalpaxis of Ridgewood, freshman at Townsend Harris, 36.000;

Helen Tseou of Bayside, fifth-grader at PS 203, 36.475.

With the help of Meaghan Carroll of Kew Gardens, a freshman at Archbishop Molloy; Stephany Preda of Fresh Meadows, eighth-grader at St. Alberts; and Veronica Preda also of Fresh Meadows and a fourth-grader at St. Alberts, the Nina’s Gymnastics team, coached by Igor Kolpakchi, took third place.
