Gerry’s Angels crowned DG girls basketball Champs

By The TimesLedger

Sparked by the spectacular shooting of Katie Brent, averaging nearly 25 points in each playoff game despite being triple teamed, Gerry's Angels ended a thrilling DG girls basketball season by beating Laura's Ladies in both games of the playoff finals.

With the stands filled to capacity with family and friends, many with signs supporting their favorites, the fans were not disappointed as they watched one of the most exciting and thrilling games of the season.

Trailing by two points with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Brent was fouled near center court in a one-and-one situation. Stepping to the line under tremendous pressure, she sank both free throws, hitting nothing but net to tie the score.

Brent was perfect from the line all game. Now it was up to Laura’s Ladies to drive up court and get the go-ahead score. Tina Mavroudes tried to dribble around Brent and was met by Christine O’Donnell, who stole the ball and dribbled the length of the floor to put in the go-ahead basket. With 15 seconds still remaining, the Ladies couldn’t get past an Angels defense and lost the ball out of bounds, which enabled the Angels to hold the ball as time expired.

All season long the Angels were a special team because they knew the importance of teamwork. Katie Boller, the center, blocking shots and rebounding, Angelica Carmody, doing everything well, passing, shooting and rebounding, as well as the speed of O’Donnell intercepting passes. Amy Reiss’ ball handling and shooting, Lauren Bova, Katy Benitez, Arianna Doulaveris and Annabel Camilleri, who all gave 100% all the time, helped to make them all special Angels.

Although Laura’s Ladies didn’t win, they were also spectacular, especially Lexie Mannix. If their was an admission to watch the game, Mannix would have been worth it. Tina Mavroudes was wonderful, as was Daniella Ortiz and a basket late in the game by Chelsea Greene made the whole gym cheer. All of the rest of the ladies, Daniella Vellucci, Nicole Conforti, Rachele Morelli, Samantha Sherman, and Michele Kuznienski, all gave their best despite defeat.

Gerry’s Angels would like to give special tribute to all the other outstanding achievers during the year especially Shannon Kern, Gillian Avery, Elizabeth Venegas, Martina Hanovich, Angela Jurkovic, Lisa Rooney, Christine McGrory, Pinar Undemir, Muge Undemir, Christine Sfiris, Patricia Tierno, Sarah Marcisak and many others who can also consider themselves true champions.
