Kids can find theater muse at the Spectrum

Children can try their hand at stage acting at the Black Spectrum Theatre Company's Children's and Teen Summer Theatre Camps. The company is located in the Roy Wilkins Park at 177th Street and Baisley Boulevard in St. Albans.

Two camps are available, one a Children's Theater camp geared for 7-12 year olds, the other a Teen Summer Theater and video camp for ages 13-17.

The Children's Theatre Camp features dance, sports, recreational games and music. Tutoring is provided for math and reading from a certified teacher, and there are field trips. The camp will also provide classes in diction, movement and scene study. The camp starts July 9th and runs to August 17, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and offers extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fees are $98 per week for regular hours, and $109 per week for the extended hours. There is an open house Saturday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m.

The Teen Summer Theater and Video Camp is a 4-week program for 13-17 year-olds. It meets every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Teens will write, direct, act and produce their own video. The program includes field trips to the Black Entertainment Network's studios and other locations.

The camp opens July 17 and runs to Aug. 11. There is a registration deposit of $100. Tuition is $690.
