By Kathianne Boniello

Bayside High School Principal Harris Sarney announced his retirement last week after 6 1/2 years as head of the artistically and musically renowned high school.

Bayside High School, at 32-24 Corporal Kennedy St., boasts about 2,700 students who come from throughout the borough.

Led by the energetic Sarney, the school features three major academic programs — science and math research, art, and a well-established music academy.

The veteran educator began his career as a teacher in 1961 at Brooklyn’s Midwood High School, where he served for 22 years. While at Midwood Sarney taught English, theater and drama and acted as the faculty and college advisor for the school.

After Midwood High School Sarney served as an acting interim principal at Jamaica High School in 1992 before taking the helm at Bayside.
