RGMVM softball wins District 27 championship

By The TimesLedger

Congratulations go out to the Ridgewood-Glendale-Middle Village-Maspeth Senior Division girls softball team, which won the 2001 New York District 27 championship. Led by Jaime Bellettini and Vicky Gardner, the team defeated defending champs Ozone-Howard in two straight games 15-7 and 11-4.

This was a well-balanced team with a strong defensive showing from Nicole Siegel, Amanda Censoprano, Amanda Berner, Dana DeFelice and Alexis Olmeda. On the offensive side, the bats of Jaime Bellittini, Vicky Gardner, Justine Venezia, Dinorah Diaz, Nicole Seltzer and Dana Marie DiMarco could not be stopped, scoring 26 runs in two games.

With the District 27 flag in hand, RGMVM went on to compete in the New York State Section III playoffs. They continued playing heads up ball and defeated the District 23 champion 12-4 before losing to East Shore Little League in the Section III championship.

Manager Mike Scotko had nothing but praise for all his players, not only for their softball skills but for their attitude and spirit

“They’re just a great bunch of girls,” Scotko said.

Special praise goes to Jaime Bellittini, who reluctantly agreed to pitch and did an outstanding job.

After going 18 years without a championship in girls softball, RGMVM now has won two in the last two years.
