The public is invited to spend a Panorama-themed evening at the museum with music, dance, refreshments, games, give-aways, and of course, art, on Feb. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Panorama of the City of New York has been a crown jewel in the museum's permanent collection since its unveiling at the 1964 World's Fair. Built at the request of legendary planner Robert Moses, the Panorama is the world's largest architectural model, containing more than 895,000 structural units and encompassing 9,335 square feet. It provides visitors with a bird's eye view of the city, down to miniature replicas of individual houses.
“Sound by Archie” will offer a wide assortment of tunes celebrating New York City, as guests dance in the museum's spacious gallery overlooking the famed Unisphere. Also scheduled is a slide marathon featuring the works of local artists, with images projected continuously throughout the evening. Prizes will be given for the winners of a treasure hunt through the galleries and hands-on art-making will attract participants of all ages.
First Thursday is a free, after-hours, open house gala held the first Thursday of every month at the Queens Museum of Art. For more information, call 718-592-9700, Ext. 223. A free trolley shuttle will be available to escort First Thursday attendees from the subway station to the museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
