Royal Cardinals 14-year-olds capture Glen Cove Mayor’s Cup

By The TimesLedger

The 14-year-old Long Island Royal Cardinals baseball team defeated the host Glen Cove Cardinals, 7-0, to capture the Glen Cove Mayor’s Cup Invitational. Tournament MVP Bobby Schnurr threw a three-hit shutout and Max Forrest’s two-hit, three -RBI performance paced the Cardinals.

This victory avenged an earlier 5-4 July loss to the same Glen Cove team. St. Francis Prep’s Schnurr finished 7-6 with a 1.77 era, for a team playing in a 14-year-old division, even though the majority of the roster were 13-year-olds. The Cardinals finished the summer 28-23 under the guidance of manager Bobby Cruz.

“I credit our success to my coaches, Danny Miller and Cesar Mates,” Cruz said. “We had 33 practices starting back in early May, along with our 51-game schedule.”

Cruz will be back to do it again in 2002, along with a majority of the players from this squad, and the 14-year-old teams in their division will have to keep an eye open for those high-flying Cardinals.
