In a defensive struggle at PS 191 last Sunday, the Our Lady of the Snows fifth-grade “Blue” team came away with a hard-fought 13-4 win over St. Anastasia of Douglaston.

Divya Johnson was the star of the game for Snows, scoring nine points on excellent shooting. Johnson put OLS into an early first-quarter lead, taking a nice pass from Sarah Lagasca and scoring the games’ first basket. Johnson’s second bucket gave OLS a 4-0 lead, but St. Anastasia battled back to tie the game at halftime.

Johnson scored three more points in the third quarter and the OLS defense stiffened to give Snows a 7-4 lead. Stephanie Payawal, Beverly Rivera, Valerie Villaneuva, Danielle Carberry, Sarah Lagasca and Jennifer Maurer led a defensive effort that held St. A’s scoreless in the second half. Fourth-quarter baskets by Maurer and Lagasca rounded out the scoring for OLS. The victory improved the Novice “Blue” team’s record to 2-1.
