Snows Novice girls pick up sixth win, 14-7

The Our Lady of the Snows’ fifth-grade ‘A’ girls basketball team improved to six wins against only one loss with a 14-7 defeat of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament at PS 186 last Saturday. The girls had struggled in the first quarter, as an inspired OLBS defense held them down. OLS bounced back core four baskets in the second quarter to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.

Snows opened up a 13-3 lead in the third quarter and then coasted to the win. Christine Wrynn led all scorers with five points. Nicole Weinman, Nicky Kaouris, Tina Khiani and Michelle Gasperetti also scored for Snows. Kaitlin Frangella and Jessica Wrynn also played well in the victory. The girls’ next opponent will be St. Mel’s at Bayside High School on Saturday, Dec. 1.

OLS Intermediate girls rally to 23-22 win

The eighth-grade ‘D’ team trailed Holy Family’s Intermediate squad 13-1 late in the second quarter, but battled all the way back to defeat their Flushing opponents, 23-22. Lauren Moskowitz sank a free throw with just seconds remaining in the game to give OLS the victory.

Baghai scores 31 in OT loss to St. Fidelis

The OLS seventh-graders fell to St. Fidelis, 67-62, in overtime last Saturday. Both teams gave the fans more excitement than a professional game. The Snows’ team was hampered by early foul trouble, but despite the odds, the score went back-and-forth all game. No team led by more than four points throughout.

Snows tied the score at 58-58 on the final shot in regulation time. By the two-minute mark in the fourth period, OLS had lost three players with five fouls, including center Joey Angerosa. OLS played the last two minutes of the OT period with four players to St. Fidelis’ five. Joey Baghai had 31 points, including two three-pointers.

Head coach Nick Pellegrino was very proud of his team, as they really showed a lot of heart and never gave up. This was truly a classic CYO game where everybody in that gym was a winner.

Rookie boys trounce St. Robert’s, 43-16

Coaches Nick Pellegrino and Mike Dietrich could not have been more pleased with their team’s effort in last weekend’s road win at St. Robert’s in Bayside. The boys played a brilliant and flawless game in which they committed only five fouls as a team. Joey Angerosa led all scorers with 22 points. Joey Baghai, Jason Sophie and Joey Pellegrino made numerous steals to set up fast-break scoring opportunities. The team defense was outstanding, as was the overall team effort.

SubNovice boys play great game

In only their second game ever on the court, the OLS SubNovice third-grade boys showed their talents by playing a great game against Our Lady Of Lourdes on Nov. 11. Offensively, OLS got four baskets from Kevin Tauriello, a basket each from Matt Laurino and Eric Walpole and a free throw by Amarpreet Walia. The OLS defense was led by numerous steals from Patrick Kelleher and Robert Cacharani and great rebounding from Brian Pabon and George DeMarco. Also contributing with great passing and hustle were Jason Joseph, Kevin Burke and Shawn Wollman. Coaches Bob Kelleher, Steve Adler and Dave Pabon were very proud of the way the boys demonstrated how much they have learned in such a short time.

Two OLS Rookie boys teams battle

In a hard-fought back-and-forth game, the OLS seventh-grade ‘K’ team, led by 17 points from Brian Huber and 12 points by Brian Kelleher, defeated the OLS seventh-grade ‘P’ team, 35-26. on Nov. 10.

Coach Joe Parrino’s ‘P’ team jumped in front 10-7 after the first quarter on two baskets by Chad Parker and one from Kevin Salcedo and excellent play by Kevin Carberry. Coach Bob Kelleher’s ‘K’ team made a strong run in the second quarter, led by baskets from J.T. Katyal and Thomas Spartinos and the hustle of Jonathan Hyatt, to taken a 13-12 halftime lead.

After an evenly played third quarter, the ‘K’ squad was able to pull away in the fourth period with Huber and Kelleher combining for all 14 of their team’s points during the period, including some clutch free throws to seal the victory.

Jean George’s seven points and Randall Cruz’s six points paced the ‘P’ team Chris Olwell and Daniel Gasperetti played great defense for the ‘K’ team, while John Cacharani was the rebounding leader and chipped in a basket for the winners.

Rookie boys defeat St. Anastasia

The OLS seventh-grade Rookie boys ‘K’ team increased its record to 3-0 on the season with a 29-12 victory over St. Anastasia on Nov. 17. J.T. Katyal led the way for OLS with eight points, followed by seven from Brian Huber, six for Brian Kelleher and four each for Jonathan Hyatt and John Cacharani. Chris Olwell, Thomas Spartinos and Daniel Gasperetti also contributed to the victory with excellent defense and team play.

SubNovice boys play another great game

The OLS third-grade Sub Novice ‘K’ team played St. Anastasia at PS 191 on Nov. 25 and once again proved to all how much they are improving with every game. The team was led by big defensive efforts from Kevin Burke, George DeMarco and Christopher Russo. Tim Mallach showed great poise at point guard, while Jason Joseph and Robert Cacharani displayed excellent passing skills. On offense, Eric Walpole, Patrick Kelleher and Matt Laurino each had four points, closely followed by Brian Pabon and Kevin Tauriello with two points apiece.

Rookie boys defeated by St. Ann’s

In well-played match-up between two unbeaten teams, St. Ann’s handed the OLS seventh-grade Rookie boys ‘K’ team their first loss of the season by a score of 46-32. St. Ann’s led throughout the game, but the OLS boys, even though behind, played hard the whole way and managed to cut an 18-point third-quarter deficit down to eight points with about three minutes to go before St. Ann’s was able to put the game away from the foul line.

Brian Kelleher played an excellent all-around game and had nine points to match Brian Huber’s nine points, as the team scoring leaders. Jonathan Hyatt played his best game of the season while scoring seven points. Thomas Spartinos had four points, J.T. Katyal two points and Daniel Gasperetti one point to round out the scoring. Even though they didn’t manage to score, Chris Olwell and John Cacharani contributed to the OLS effort with their tough defense and rebounding. The loss leaves coach Kelleher’s squad with a 3-1 overall record, while St. Ann’s is now 5-0 on the year.

Intermediates top Holy Family, 41-35

The OLS boys Intermediate (Sweeney) team defeated Holy Family, 41-35, in this foul-filled game to improve their record to 3-0. Snows jumped out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter behind the scoring of David Marrero, Brain Amorese and Eric Miller. By halftime OLS was up 20-10, as they capitalized on the foul line, making all six attempts in the first half. Holy Family cut the lead to two point by the end of the third quarter, but an aggressive man-to-man defense led by Ashton Mills put the game away for OLS. John Ryan, Richard Kim, Bobbin Chakyayil and Peter Sweeney also contributed to the win.

Miller led Snows with 16 point, with help from Marrero’s 11 points. Brain Amorese chipped in with nine, Ashton Mills had four and Brian White closed out the scoring with one point. OLS won this game on the foul line, shooting 11-for-19 from the charity stripe, as compared to Holy Family, who shoot 5-for-19 from the line.

Snows’ next game is Saturday, Dec. 1, at 12:30 p.m. at PS 191 against the OLBS (F) team.

Sixth-graders edge St. Luke’s, 16-15

The Our Lady of the Snows sixth-grade boys basketball team improved its season record to 3-1 by defeating St. Luke’s, 16-15, on Saturday. The Snows boys jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and led at half-time, 14-6, but went cold in the second half, shooting just 1-for-20. The boys held on by applying a very aggressive press which held St. Luke’s to only two foul shots made in the fourth quarter. The leading scorers for OLS were Ray Potestio with six points, Brian Biscotti and Arnab Mitra each had four and Anthony Civitano chipped in two. The press was led by Ryan Paroulek, Jonathan Dupuy, Billy Fitzgerald, Nicholas Walker, Alex Rydzewski, Leroy Herbert, Kevin McMurray and Jorel Phelps. Next up for the Snows team is St. Fidelis on Saturday.
