Queens parsihes battle for CYO girls hoop crowns


The 2001 CYO Girls Diocesan championships were held this past Sunday at St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows. The day was highlighted by the Rookie Division matchup of St. Francis DeSales (Rockaway) and St. Adalbert’s (Elmhurst).

The 2001 CYO Girls Diocesan championships were held this past Sunday at St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows. The day was highlighted by the Rookie Division matchup of St. Francis DeSales (Rockaway) and St. Adalbert’s (Elmhurst).

The game was nip and tuck throughout, with Jill Brady sinking two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to seal the 42-38 win form St. Adalbert’s. The victory clinched the third consecutive championship for this St. Francis team.

Carissa Pirotta led St. Adalbert’s with 20 points.

In the PeeWee Division, St. Clare’s (Rosedale) topped St. Joan of Arc (Jackson Heights) 55-27 for the crown, the first for the parish. Gellisa George led with 20 points for the winners.

St. Bartholomew (Elmhurst) locked up the Novice Division championship with a tough 23-18 win over St. Francis DeSales (Rockaway). Natalie Castano led St. Bart’s with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while St. Francis was paced by Michelle Kenee’s 10 points.

The Bantam Division was captured by Our Lady of Lourdes (Queens Village), topping St. Mary’s Winifield (Woodside) 36-28 in the finals. Stephanie Moss had 11, but five players contributed four points or more for Lourdes’ well-balanced attack. Kate White had 14 for St. Mary’s.

Our Lady of Hope (Middle Village) squeaked by St. Andrew’s (Flushing) 43-41 for the Intermediate crown. Melissa Kapela and Kristen Steffers led the winners with 18 and 12 points, respectively. Jessica McEntee added 19 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort.

In the Cadet Division, St. Pancras (Glendale) edged St. Robert’s (Bayside), 37-35. Dinorah Diaz had 11 points, including the winning bucket with 6.5 seconds remaining in the game. Jessica Sanchez had 14 points for St. Robert’s.

St. Joseph’s (Astoria) got past Monastery (Jamaica Estates) 67-61, as Mary Louis players Liz Strein and Stephanie Godzewski each scored 15 and Erin Brean contributed 16 points and eight assists. Cardozo-bound Ashley Bandism led Monastery with 15.

In the final game of the day, Our Lady of Mercy (Forest Hills) topped Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 50-42, in the Junior Division. Maisha Duval had 16 points for the winners, while Christina Gordon scored 15 points and dished out five assists in a losing effort.
