Borough Jewish group to honor FDNY March 11

Atlas, a Queens-based Jewish outreach group, is sponsoring a tribute to the heroes of Sept. 11 on the sixth-month anniversary of the attacks.

The program will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 11, at the Holliswood Jewish Center, 86-25 Francis Lewis Blvd. It is open to the public.

The tribute will feature a guest speaker who will discuss moving past the anguish of Ground Zero, said Rabbi Mark Nenner, of Atlas. A cantor will sing and say prayers, and Assemblyman Mark Weprin (D-Bayside) is expected to attend, Nenner said. The group also invited representatives from the fire department, he said.

“We just kind of did it for the firefighters,” said Nenner.

The program will look at the issues surrounding the Sept. 11 attacks from a Jewish philosophy, but it is open to everyone, Nenner said.

Atlas, or Affiliations Through Learning And Spirituality, is an outreach program that allows people to learn more about the religion and culture, Nenner said.

“We offer beginning Judaism for people who want to learn about their heritage,” he said.

The group offers programs and classes in all levels of Judaism, such as Hebrew reading and Torah interpretations, as well as a “Lunch and Learn” program, Nenner said.

“We seek to promote Jewish identity and offer a very user-friendly approach,” he said.
