College Point ‘Survivor’ keeps his winning ways

By Brian M. Rafferty

With a temporary delay due to the NCAA tournament, “Survivor” is back on Thursday nights, and Robert DeCanio of College Point remains in good shape.

Though he sliced his toe open on a rock two episodes ago, DeCanio has managed to avoid any major problems. His tribe, though shaken up by a switch in members last Thursday, has yet to lose any challenges – for rewards or immunity.

DeCanio’s friends and family in Queens must have been a bit disgusted watching him bob for chunks of stewed, rotten fish in brine, but he has had the good fortune of being in the Rotu Tribe, comprised mainly of hard workers with strong stomachs.

Though a switch in tribe members has caused conflict between two of the three former Maraamu men and the remaining Rotu tribe members, it seems apparent that the newly-designated Rotu members will be picked off if Rotu ever loses a challenge.

There are now 12 survivors left. Typically, when only 10 remain, the tribes merge into one and the immunity changes from being for the tribe to being personal immunity, protecting the player who wins it from being voted off in that week’s tribal council.

In previews for this week’s episode: The winning tribe in the reward challenge gets to raid the other tribe’s camp; One castaway’s innocent comment sparks a flurry of activity; The new Maraamu celebrates its discovery of a new source of food; A new leader seeks to assume power at Rotu.

Who knows? Maybe it’s DeCanio. Watch and see.

“Survivor” airs at 8 p.m. Thursday on CBS.
