Opening day for the ages at Jamaica Estates-Holliswood L.L.

By The TimesLedger

Jamaica Estates-Holliswood Little League marched hundreds of players, relatives, friends, in the Opening Day Parade April 13, along Union Turnpike, Francis Lewis Boulevard, 73th Avenue.

Led by officers of the 107th Precinct, the Jamaica-Holliswood-South Bayside Ambulance Corps, bagpiper and drummer, the parade led to the JEHLL ball fields in Cunningham Park. Greeting JEHLL were New York City Council Member James Gennaro and New York State Assembly Member Mark Weprin.

Director Carol Hochberg led JEHLL in applauding the enthusiasm, good playing, and good friends of the highly diverse JEHLL members, many of whom speak several languages, including English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Cantonese and Urdu.

Families smiled with the players, from the five and six-year-old Instructional Division to the older teens playing baseball and softball.

JEHLL filled up its rosters with boys and girls during the winter. They will play through late June, then meet in the fall for the annual awards breakfast at St. John's, where last season's speaker was Mets player Joe McEwing. For information about the league call 718-670-7178.
