The second in a series of three female directors will show her film for high school students Thursday afternoon at the American Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria.
Made possible in part by a grant from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the series, “Women in Film, Women on Film” gives students a rare opportunity to view some of the most acclaimed independent films of recent years and then meet the directors.
The series includes “Girlfight,” directed by Karyn Kusama, which was presented April 25; “The Execution of Wanda Jean,” directed by Liz Garbus, which will be shown Thursday; and “The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love,” directed by Maria Maggenti, to be shown May 23. Each screening begins at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
“Karyn Kusama, Liz Garbus, and Maria Maggenti offer visions of female experience that are rarely examined in mainstream movies,” said Dawn Williams, the museum’s manager of education programs. “With varying approaches to fiction, nonfiction, drama, and comedy, the films—and filmmakers—offer experiences marked by authenticity and insight.”
Teachers may make reservations for groups of students by calling 784-4520, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students may also make reservations on their own.
