Snows 7th-grade girls defeat St. Kevin’s in season finalé

By The TimesLedger

The Our Lady of the Snows CYO girls’ seventh-grade softball team ended its season on a high note, as the team knocked off the defending Diocesan champions from St. Kevin’s, 5-4. It was only the second loss of the year for the St. Kevin’s team, which heads into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed following their 13-2 first-place finish. St. Gregory’s also heads to the playoffs with a 12-3 record and the No. 2 seed. The OLS squad finished in third place with a 9-6 record.

St. Kevin’s jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but OLS tied it in the home first, as Brittney Wallace tagged up and scored on Vanessa Zampelli’s sac fly to right-center field. Krissy Amorese scored to give OLS a 2-1 lead, as Megan Brosnan dropped down a perfect two-out, two-strike bunt. Snows’ increased its lead to 4-1, as Amanda Tolento and Lauren Marino walked with the bags full to score Angie Campana and Nicolette Viglietta. Brittney Wallace hauled in a deep drive to left field to record the final out of the fourth inning.

The OLS defense was brilliant through five innings, but two throwing errors in the top of the sixth allowed St. Kevin’s to rally and tie the score at 4-4. Sue Garrett, who had two hits on the day, led off the home sixth with a walk and came around to score what proved to be the winning run on Angie Campana’s RBI ground out. After the St. Kevin’s lead-off hitter reached second base to open the final inning, Shannon Moran hauled in a high pop foul for the first out, Angie Campana caught a pop up for out No. 2, and shortstop Sue Garrett just nailed the final out on a close play with a strong throw to Vanessa Zampelli at first base. Despite feeling sick and battling a sore heel, pitcher Krissy Amorese threw a strong seven innings to pick up the complete game win. Nicole Bavaro and Lisa Cuiman also aided the OLS team effort.
