Snows track stars shine at Astoria Park meet

The Our Lady of the Snows CYO boys’ track team edged St. Fidelis, 59-58, to capture the CYO Western Division outdoor track championship. Coach Mauricio Paz was very proud as his boys’ team raced to 26 points at the June 1 Day of Dashes held at Astoria Park to bring home the gold.

Fourth-grader Joseph Feisel led OLS in the long jump with a leap of 7-feet-9. Junior division runner Scott Wheeler placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:05. Novice division runner Brian Concannon finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 18.0 seconds and bantam David Arroyave brought home the gold medal in his 100-meter dash with a time of 16.2 seconds. Senior runner, Oscar Shiroma also brought home a gold medal with his first-place finish in the 100. Oscar is the CYO record holder for Brooklyn/Queens with a time of 11.4 seconds. Snows’ runners also enjoyed success in the 50-meter dash, as Bantams Christopher McClain and Brian Hartigan finished first and third with times of 8.6 and 9.0.

Chris Olwell, Antonio Pilato, Matt Robinson, Ivan Salazar, Nicholas Chavez, Yuval and Sasha McFadden and Joseph DeRisi and Dilan Chu all contributed to the boys’ team-winning effort.

The OLS girls’ team also performed well at Astoria Park. Long jumpers, Michaela Giacomazza, Melissa Paz and Andrea Losito each helped the short-handed Snows squad to a fifth-place finish in the CYO Western Division. Bantam runner Tabitha Garnica ran fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:30.1. Bantam 100-meter runner Shannon Vetack also ran well during the spring season. Rachel Golden, Jennifer Crohn, Angela Chavez, Anna Maria Pilato, Theresa, Nicolette and Gabrielle Pullo all contributed to the girls’ team effort during the spring.

Coach Paz and his runners are looking forward autumn and the Cross Country track meets held at Alley Pond Park.
