Snows Intermediates say perfect with win over Holy Family, 42-34

By The TimesLedger

The Our Lady of the Snows Intermediate (Sweeney) team won its eighth game of the season with a hard-fought 42-34 win over Holy Family last Saturday. Snows, for the second game in a row, started slow, trailing 10-8 after the first quarter and was down 17-14 at the half.

Snows opened the third quarter with a full-court press and took command of the game, outscoring Holy Family 28-17 in the second half for the win. Anthony Simmons and Asthon Mills again led Snows back on defense with their outstanding play. John Ryan and Bobbin Chakyayil also played key roles in helping OLS get back into the game in the second half.

Matt Oellinger played his best game of the year — even though he didn’t score a point — by playing excellent defense and helping set up many baskets on offense.

Brian White scored 12 points to lead OLS in scoring with help from David Marrero with eight points, Eric Miller with seven points and Brian Amorese with seven points and many rebounds and blocks. Peter Sweeney had two long jump shots for four point and Asthon Mills had four points.

Snows tries to improve to 9-0, on Jan. 26 with an away game at St. Fidelis at 2:30 p.m.

OLS sixth-graders fall to St. Gregory’s

The Our Lady of the Snows sixth-grade boys team lost a hard-fought game to St. Gregory’s this weekend, 26-17. St. Greg’s jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Snows hung tough and cut the lead to 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. The game then settled in between two even teams and the half ended with St. Greg’s leading 13-8.

As usual, the Snows press produced results in the third quarter, as they outscored their opposition, 7-3, to trail by one going into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter opened with Brian Biscotti scoring two of his three points to give OLS their first and only lead, 17 -16. But the amount of energy they had expended proved to be too much. St. Greg’s went on a 10 -0 run to end the game and win the game 26-17.

Leading the offense for Snows was Jonathan Dupuy, who had six points, Ray Potestio added four and Anthony Civitano and Arnab Mitra each chipped in with two. The defensive pressure was applied by Ryan Paroulek, Alex Rydzewski, Kevin McMurray, Billy Fitzgerald, Leroy Herbert and Nicholas Walker.

The Snows will next take the court Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2:15 p.m.
