Queens Village 3-year-old accidentally killed by dad

By Adam Kramer

A 3-year-old Queens Village boy who was shot last week when his father’s gun accidentally went off died last Thursday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, L.I., police said.

Jonathan Oleya was shot by his father, Hernando Oleya 31, a corrections officer, who was cleaning his off-duty weapon July 31 at 9:14 p.m. in their Queens Village home near 221st Street and 100th Avenue, police said. Police said his Glock 9mm suddenly fired, hitting his son.

Police said the bullet entered through the boy’s right arm and continued through his upper torso. Jonathan Oleya was rushed to the hospital in stable condition, police said, but his condition took a turn for the worse and he died at 12:10 a.m.

The Police Department deemed the shooting accidental, police said and no investigation was planned.

The Corrections Department did not respond to repeated calls for comment on the shooting.

The Daily News reported that the Corrections Department would review the shooting but wanted to help the family get through this event.

Corrections officers are not required to have a gun and are not allowed to use them at work, the paper said. But many officers purchase off-duty firearms.
