Bayside Commodores run over Tilden for first win

By Anthony Bosco and Dylan Butler

The Bayside High School varsity football team opened its league season Saturday with a convincing 35-6 victory over Tilden High School.

The Commodores used a potent ground attack, led by tailback Drew Williams, who had seven carries for 86 yards and one touchdown, to soundly thump their hosts, wracking up 236 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

It was a critical win for the Commodores, who lost to Curtis in a non-league game the week before.

“The fact that we rebounded was important,” said Bayside head coach Joe Capuana. “How we treat it is one day at a time.”

Bayside shut out Tilden through three quarters, taking a commanding 35-0 lead into the fourth and having scored a touchdown on every offensive possession. Tilden scored in the final minute of the game against Bayside’s second team to spoil the shutout.

“We always felt we had a good defense,” Capuana said. “Offensively we needed to get on track and we did.”

Williams scored a touchdown to open the game and then ripped off a 75-yard run to set up teammate Richie Richards for the team’s second score early in the second quarter. Williams was hurt following his long run and sat the rest of the game.

Richards carried the ball four times for 72 yards and two touchdowns and freshman Unique Stowe had 46 yards on six carries and 13 tackles. Quarterback Zanu Simpson, who was 3-for-7 for 85 yards and one touchdown, added a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jarrett Perry. Perry had two catches for 80 yards.

Bayside is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Commodores will travel to take on Susan Wagner (0-1) Saturday at 1 p.m. Wagner, a PSAL semifinalist last year, lost its opener to Fort Hamilton, 20-8.

John Adams 14, Erasmus Hall 12. Tristan Lefoon (101 yards on 10 carries) scored the game-winning touchdown, a 33-yard scamper with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, and Richie Lopez ran for 75 yards on eight carries for the Spartans (2-0, 1-0 Queens) Saturday.

Long Island City 24, New Dorp 0. Marc Perez scored a 1-yard touchdown and rushed for 55 yards, Mark Satterwhite had a 41-yard touchdown and Kharum Shahzad added a pair of sacks for LIC (2-0, 1-0 Queens), which takes on Bryant (0-1) Saturday at 11 a.m. at Flushing Memorial Field.

Brooklyn Tech 28, August Martin 0. The Falcons were shutout for a second straight week as Erhin Yuseyoyiborhoro rushed for 153 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown and Ahmed Shama caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Michael Durese for Brooklyn Tech (1-0). Martin hosts Lehman (1-0) Saturday at noon.

Springfield Gardens 2, Stevenson 0. The Golden Eagles picked up their second win of the season via forfeit following the cancellation of the Stevenson football program last week. Springfield is now 2-0 overall and 1-1 in league play.
