RAA Artsplash 2002 kicks off October 5

All are welcome to Rockaway Artists Alliance Artsplash 2002, a month-long multimedia arts extravaganza. A wine and cheese opening reception will be held Sunday from noon – 4 p.m. and will feature live performances.

Oct. 5 through Nov. 3 the Rockaway Arts Center at Fort Tilden will exhibit the work of 50 visual artists of varied media in RAA’s two gallery buildings and sculpture gardens. Celtic hip-hop band Seanchai is among the diverse roster of performing and literary artists scheduled on weekend afternoons and evenings for RAA’s outdoor and indoor stages.

Featured during Artsplash 2002 is a special exhibition of works produced during “paint-outs” participated in by the Brooklyn Watercolor Society and the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Curator for visual arts for Artsplash 2002 is Dr. Rikki Asher, Director of Art Education at CUNY, Queens College. Curator of literary and performing arts is director/writer/actor Sandra Overstreet. Two $250 awards for excellence will be presented. Award winners will be chosen from all the visual, performing and literary artists.

Elliott Killian, Julia Kozlyansky, Lucille Lacey, Helen Lurye, Denis Macrae, Gwendolyn Marcinek, Margaret Massa, Ann McCarron, Maryann McEvoy, Maureen R. McGuire, Jean Jackson Moore, Maryann Pilutik, Robin Pogrebitsky, Geoff Rawling, Cindy Rosin, Joseph Rothenberg, John Russo, Jean Sammis, Robert Sarnoff, Christina Sarquiz, Judith Shea, Izabella Slobodoff, Lois Stiene, David Symmonds, Joan Doblin Vogel, Victor Zinuhov.

There is free admission to exhibitions and all events, and self-guided tours of outdoor sculpture and the park can be enjoyed daily from dawn to dusk.

Gallery hours are Saturdays noon – 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 1 4 p.m. Artsplash 2002 is presented by RAA in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area.
