To The Point: Local VFW renamed for longtime member

By Sabina Cardali

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point.

Commander James Reilly and Auxiliary President Rose Cervasio announced that the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post No. 885 changed its name Sept. 21 to Everett F. Herrel College Point Post No. 885, at 120-19 14th Rd.

Everett Herrel, known as “Sarge” for 56 years, was a longtime member who dedicated his life to the VFW and the community of College Point. He was involved in youth activities, Little League, bowling, Memorial Day committees, parades and the poppy campaign, and most of all, service to his country.

This dedication took place at the post with family and friends, post and auxiliary members present. Everett passed away in February and will be missed.

The Poppenhusen Institute will be mounting a Sept. 11 Memorial Exhibit, which will focus on those lost from College Point. It opens at the end of October and will be open for at least one year or probably more. For the sake of privacy and respect, the first opening will be only for family, clergy and representatives from the firehouse and police precinct. The following week, the public and special organizations will be invited for a second opening.

Sabina says…A strong word of caution. Nine cars were broken into at a recent golf tournament. Do not leave wallets, credit cards or laptop computers in the car when you go out to play.
