JEHLL holds annual awards breakfast at SJU

The Jamaica Estates-Holliswood Little League celebrated its players and teams at its Annual Awards Breakfast on Oct. 19, at St. John’s University. the event’s keynote speaker was Ed Charles, “The Glider,” a star of the 1969 World Se

Charles, a dignified figure in the world of baseball, encouraged the young players to dream and to work hard to realize those dreams. He reminisced about some highlights of his career and some differences between playing in the Major Leagues today and when he played professionally. He spoke strongly against players use of any drugs at all. As he posed for pictures, signed autographs and conversed, he permitted others the thrill of trying on his World Series ring and exchanged opinions about plays and players.

Weprin and Gennaro reiterated their support for the league and the pleasure at joining the families again. Each had joined JEHLL at other events during the 2002 season. League President Paul Karchawer reminded parents that JEHLL runs only with their participation.

Preceding the program was the annual meeting of JEHLL. League members elected a Board of Directors for 2002-2003. The new Board meets Nov. 7, to elect its officers. A varied brunch buffet, players’ trophies, raffle and prizes filled out the fun of the yearly event for the youth and families of JEHLL. Nearly 100 players registered eagerly and early for the 2003 spring season before leaving the breakfast.
