Editorial: The pride of Astoria

By The TimesLedger

Congratulations to Steinway and Sons and the 500 employees who have made this company one of America’s great success stories. The manufacturer of the world’s best pianos recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Although the company started manufacturing on the other side of the East River, it has been a part of Astoria since 1870.

The Steinways found success the old-fashioned way. They set out to make the world’s best pianos and to this day they have done just that.

At last week’s anniversary celebration, Steinway President Dennis Tortora made it clear that Steinway and Astoria are joined at the hip.

“We’re very fortunate,” he said. “This neighborhood has many generations of Steinway craftsmen who have worked in our factory here, who live very close by. It’s been a great legacy.”
