OLBS fourth-grade hoop team captures CYO Diocesan crown

The Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament boys’ ‘A’ PeeWee basketball team clinched the CYO Diocesan championship title, 30-20, against St. Thomas More on Sunday, March 16.

OLBS stuck with its NYC style of basketball, keeping the tempo high on both ends of the floor. OLBS’ smothering full-court press and half-court man-zone defense did not allow many easy shots for St. Thomas More, a very good outside shooting team.

The backcourt duo of Joey Salerno and Kevin Durkan gave OLBS the offensive edge. OLBS led at the half by five points, 14-9, and never looked back. OLBS forwards Duke Guerra and James Caifrey were rebounding magnets on both ends of the floor, often not allowing second opportunities for St. Thomas More to score.

OLBS was able to maintain its full-court pressure because of the relentless effort of Zac Droblas and Joseph Gonzalez. Center John Comisky proved to be an impenetrable wall on the defensive end.

Mike Passini also contributed greatly to the win. This year 41 CYO teams were included in the tournament. The OLBS squad had to win five games against tough opponents before claiming the CYO championship. The OLBS team is coached by Greg Salerno, Len Guerra and Dan Droblas.
