ASTORIA – Divers from the NYPD Scuba Unit rescued a 5-year-old boy who fell into the East River and two bystanders who jumped in to save him Monday, police said.
The boy had been playing ball near 20th Road and Shore Boulevard when he fell into the frigid water. Two good Samaritans — 33-year-old Javier Torres and 28-year-old Jarrit Scotti, a Sanitation Department security officer, dove into the river after him, police said.
Two NYPD divers dropped via helicopter rescued the three and took them aboard a police boat. Torres and the boy were treated at Elmhurst Hospital Center for abrasions and hypothermia. Scotti was treated at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center for a more serious case of hypothermia.
JACKSON HEIGHTS – A 21-year-old woman was abducted Saturday afternoon in front of 80-14 Roosevelt Ave. by two men as she was leaving work, police said.
The suspects allegedly forced the woman into a livery cab and took her to another location where they made sexual advances toward her, police said.
According to police, the victim was able to call her husband from a cellular telephone that belonged to one of the suspects. She then fled the location and notified authorities.
Police arrested 20-year old Estevan Uzcha and 18-year-old Rigoberto Gomez, both of 50-14 101 St. in Corona, and charged them with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, authorities said. Uzcha was also charged with resisting arrest and Gomez with sexual abuse.
OZONE PARK – A North Fork Bank at 103-42 Lefferts Blvd. was robbed April 9 by a 28-year-old man, police said.
The man passed a note demanding money to a teller and fled with $2,623, police said.
There were no injuries and no arrest was made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
ASTORIA – A livery cab driver sitting in his car at 31st Street and Astoria Boulevard was tied up and robbed by three men April 9, police said.
The 28-year-old driver was approached at 6 a.m. by three men in their 20s who ordered him into the back of the car at knifepoint, police said.
The men tied up the driver, stole $250 from him and drove his cab to 31st Avenue and 98th Street in East Elmhurst, where they left the cab and the driver in the back seat, police said.
There were no injuries or arrests and the investigation was ongoing, police said.
SUNNYSIDE — A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the chest by an unknown attacker about 11:25 p.m. Friday, according to police.
The attack occurred on the 48th Street overpass above the Long Island Expressway. The victim was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital where he died of his wounds.
OZONE PARK — A Chase Manhattan bank at 111-18 Liberty Ave. was robbed Friday morning by a male in his 30s, police said. The man passed a note to a teller demanding money and fled with about $2,600. No one was injured and there were no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
ELMHURST — A passenger with a suspected case of severe acute respiratory syndrome was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center Saturday afternoon after complaining of symptoms in the US Airways terminal at LaGuardia Airport.
But doctors later determined that the woman did not have SARS, and most likely was suffering from a cold or the flu.
The woman had just arrived at Kennedy Airport from Singapore on Singapore Air flight No. 26, and was waiting to make a connecting flight at LaGuardia, a Port Authority police spokesman said.
Most of the more than 3,000 people worldwide who have been diagnosed with the disease are either from East Asian countries, or have recently traveled to those areas.
FOREST HILLS — A 31-year-old woman arrested for driving while intoxicated slipped out of handcuffs and escaped while awaiting processing in the 112th Precinct station house early Friday morning, police said.
Kaminee Singh of Winter Garden, Fla., was later apprehended by detectives at 161 Hendrix St. in Brooklyn.
Police Officer Montgomery Summa, assigned to the Queens South Task Force, was suspended without pay for 30 days in connection with the incident, a police spokesman said.
KEW GARDENS — A Bronx man was arrested April 9 in connection with seven armed bank robberies in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn, police said.
Martin Pedro, 21, of 929 East 169th St., allegedly robbed the M&T Bank at 101-25 Queens Blvd. in Kew Gardens Oct. 15 and the Greenpoint Bank at 189-02 Linden Blvd. in South Jamaica Nov. 23, police said.
LAURELTON – A Ridgewood Savings Bank at 230-02 Merrick Blvd. was robbed April 9 by two 20-year-old men, police said.
One of the men passed a note to a teller demanding money before the pair fled with $9,012, police said.
There were no reported injuries and the investigation was ongoing, police said.
FLUSHING — A contractor working on a project in Queens College has been charged with forcing his employees to pay him part of their wages, said New York state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
Savvas Savva of East Elmhurst was arraigned last Thursday in front of State Supreme Court Judge Suzanne Melendez on charges of scheming five of his laborers out of more than $100,000, Spitzer said.
Through his Long Island City-based company EuroCraft Restoration Inc., Savva certified payroll records attesting his workers were paid prevailing wages while working at Queens College from July 2001 to May 2002, Spitzer said.
But Savva required a “kick-back” portion of their paychecks, collecting $105,741 of their wages, Spitzer said.
If convicted, Savva faces up to 15 years in prison.
KEW GARDENS HILLS — A 14-year old student at PS 168 was slashed in the face by a classmate Monday, police said.
The incident occurred following a dispute between the two students. The suspect, described by police as a 14-year-old black male, fled the scene.
The victim was taken to New York Hospital Medical Center Queens in stable condition.
There were no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
LITTLE NECK – A 20-year veteran of the Fire Department was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a two-car accident early Sunday morning at Northern Boulevard and Marathon Parkway, police and fire officials said.
Peter Feeney, a firefighter at Engine Co. 313 in Douglaston, was suspended without pay pending an investigation, the Fire Department said.
There were no injuries reported following the accident, according to the Police Department.
ELMONT — A Queens Village man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car on Elmont Road in Elmont Saturday night, police said.
John E. Camp, 27, succumbed to his injuries after his 2000 Honda motorcycle plowed into a 1994 Nissan driven by 67-year-old Mohammed Yoqub of Elmont, police said. The accident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. as Camp was driving north on Elmont Road and Yoqub, headed south, was making a left turn onto Cromer Road, police said.
Camp was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead early Sunday morning.
Yoqub was treated for minor injuries.
No summonses were issued at the scene, police said, but the investigation is ongoing.
HOLLIS – Police released a sketch April 9 of a man who they say forced a 58-year-old woman into an alley at gunpoint and raped her.
The attack occurred near 193rd Street and Jamaica Avenue April 7, police said.
The suspect was described by police as a black man about 25 years old, 5 feet tall, with a stocky build and a missing front tooth. He was wearing a black hood, black jacket and black jeans at the time of the attack, police said.

HOLLIS – A 33-year-old man was extradited from North Carolina and charged April 9 in the murder of a Hollis man Dec. 31, police said.
Timothy Pelsey, 33, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Gregory Frazier, 28, of 102-34 188th St., police said.
Frazier was shot once in the neck in front of his home and died at Mary Immaculate Hospital Jan. 4, police said.
Pelsey was extradited from Lumberton, N.C., police said.
JAMAICA — A 40-year-old man was stabbed twice in the stomach shortly after midnight Saturday morning during a dispute with a man known to him, police said.
The dispute occurred at the intersection of Sutphin Boulevard and 110th Road.
The suspect, described by police as a 34-year-old black man, was arrested and charged with assault.
The victim was in critical condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital.
