2003 TimesLedger All-Queens Girls Basketball Teams

First Team

Monique Jenkins Sr. G August Martin

The leader of a young and much improved August Martin, the senior point guard averaged 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while finishing second in the city in free-throw percentage (80.4 percent). In her final high school game, Jenkins scored a game-high 19 points as the Angels nearly upset Francis Lewis in the PSAL quarterfinals.

Jasmin Lawrence Jr. G/F Francis Lewis

The stats (9.3 points, 2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game) aren’t spectacular, but look beyond the numbers to see just how special Lawrence was on the court for Francis Lewis. When on, the two-time TimesLedger All-Queens first-team player is virtually unstoppable.

Shanay Freeman Jr. F T. Harris

A year after exploding on the scene, Freeman became one of the borough’s best players this year, single-handedly carrying Townsend Harris into the playoffs. The 5-foot-7 dynamo did a little bit of everything at Townsend Harris, averaging 17.5 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

Leah Lipschitz Jr. F Cardozo

In his 20 years of coaching girls’ basketball at Cardozo, Larry Carradine has never seen a player improve more from one year to the next than Leah Lipschitz. The 5-foot-8 forward led Cardozo in scoring (18.1 points per game) and rebounding (13.8 rebounds per game) in addition to averaging 3 assists per game.

Katreem Palmer Jr. F Beach Channel

Nicknamed “The Dream,” there was nothing Palmer couldn’t do on the court for Beach Channel this year. Technically a forward, Palmer was too versatile to be tied down to a position. Instead, just call the 5-foot-11 junior a player. Palmer averaged 21.2 points, 16 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Dolphins while often drawing double teams.

Second Team

Gayle Silverstein Jr. G Bayside

She wrote the words “No Fear” on her hands before the playoffs, and the junior sharpshooter played that way in the postseason for the Commodores. After averaging 15.4 points per game during an undefeated regular season, Silverstein poured in 20 points per game in the playoffs for Bayside.

Britni Bolden Jr. G/F Cardozo

Despite playing out of position, the 5-foot-7 power forward/center epitomized the grit and determination of the undersized Judges. Bolden, a second-year TimesLedger All-Queens selection, averaged 13.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. “She’s a fearless offensive and defensive rebounder,” Carradine said.

Dinorah Diaz Jr. F John Adams

Despite the move up in competition — John Adams went from the ‘B’ division to the ‘A’ this year — Diaz put up the same numbers, averaging 16.7 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. “When we needed a rebound, she got it,” said John Adams coach Tom Glass. “When we needed a big basket, she got it.”

Alaina Davis Jr. F Francis Lewis

Like Lawrence, Davis’ contributions go beyond the stat sheet. The 5-foot-11 junior forward averaged 8.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and was consistently one of the better post players in the borough for Francis Lewis, which finished 29-2.

Nicole Michael So. F August Martin

The sky’s the limit for this 6-foot-1 forward, who averaged 13.5 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Able to dominate the boards, drive the lane and put the ball on the floor in the open court, Michael also was eighth in the city in free-throw percentage (76.1 percent).
