To The Point: College Pt. volunteers host installation dinner

By Sabina Cardali

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. It has come to pass: The birds and animals patiently waited for the real spring weather to arrive, and they were successful and were actually swimming in the fountain, very thankful.

The College Point Memorial Day Parade will be Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. If you aren’t in the parade, it is important that you, your family and friends will be observing it. It is important that we honor our armed forces who are defending our country and our people.

The College Point Volunteer Ambulance Corps had its annual installation dinner-dance at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant on Long Island. The officers are Christopher Legaz, president; Richard Clausen, vice president; Eddy Petersen, service secretary; Michael McCorey, treasurer; Chris Mancini, recording secretary; Paula Simmons, corresponding secretary; Chris Mancini, sergeant at arms; and Mary Vesely, historian and chaplain.

On the board of directors are chairman Chris Mancini, Karen Clausen, William Falquero, Anthony Denapoli and Paula Simmons. Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose), myself and Rocco, Karl Fassberger, Garry Fredrickson, Fred Mazzarello, Tom and Paula Palma and Mel and Annie Wolinksy also were in attendance. The dinner chairperson was Karen Clausen.

The neighboring corps of Bayside, Flushing, Little Neck, Douglaston and Whitestone also deserve mention. A great deal of gratitude to all these hardworking volunteers in helping the College Point community when it is needed.

Condolences to the family of Jack Consiglio.

Condolences to the family of Doris McFeely, an officer and member of the St. Ambrose Columbionettes for many years.

Congratulations to Maureen Pupplo and Greta Hruska on bowling 217 and 229, respectively, at Whitestone Lanes.

The Greater Whitestone Taxpayers Civic Association and Councilman Tony Avella’s (D-Bayside) office sponsored a yellow ribbon event at Francis Lewis Park.

The Parish Health Ministry of Grace Episcopal Church on 14th Avenue (across from the public library in Whitestone) is holding its annual health fair in the upper parish hall on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Health professionals will be available for guidance and education. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

The Poppenhusen Institute will present “Art Safari,” an event displaying animals and art published by author Joyce Raimonda. Slides of famous works of art that include animals will be shown and explained, and an exciting related crafts project will follow. Parents are welcome to stay and share in the art experience. There is a fee of $5 and preregistration is required. This event will be Friday, April 25, at 1 p.m. For further information, please call 718-358-0067.
