Glen Oaks L.L.: Joe’s Pizza Cyclones scalp LI Tomahawk Braves, 5-4

James Wolfin celebrated his 10th birthday with a game ball for saving his team’s first win with a great defensive play and excellent relief pitching, as the Joe’s Pizza Cyclones held off a late inning comeback to narrowly defeat the Long Island

Wolfin’s best friend, Braves’ Kevin Han, had a sixth-inning hit, which brought the Braves within one run of the lead before Wolfin was able to record the final out to seal the win. Cyclones’ starter Blake Cholost allowed only one unearned run in his four innings on the mound to keep his ERA at 0.00 for the young season.

Trevor Stark also pitched for the Cyclones. Stark was throwing beautifully, but after two batters were unable to get out of the way of his fast ball, the umpire ordered a pitching change.

Rohan Shah, Rahul Kadakia, Steven Pelan and Wolfin were the hitting stars for the Cyclones. Shah also had an outfield assist as he threw out a Braves’ runner who was attempting to stretch a hit into a double, leading off the fourth inning. Scott Carey and Michael Kelly each walked and scored a run for the Cyclones.

Mets top Braves in slugfest, 14-9

In Saturday’s matchup against a big hitting A’s squad, the Mets came through again with some big hits of their own and some solid teamwork, outscoring the A’s 14-9.

Mets’ winning pitcher Jeremy Goldberg helped his own cause by going 3-for-3 with a homerun, a double and a clean single. He was given the game ball for his outstanding day on the mound and at the plate.

Patrick Florian, who leads the Mets in hitting, also had another stellar day. Going 2-for-2 with four runs scored, Kruczowy had a great day at the plate with three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Anthony Loguiduice, Mike Costanza and Matt Kruczowy were solid in the field and kept the Mets in the game with some great defense. Ed Dillon had the game-winning run for the Mets.

Vinny Antunucci said after the game that if John Barbari gets hit by another pitch in a game, he is going to take matters into his own hands.

The A’s also hit well, with some big blasts by Justin Dillon, Gabe Gomez and Sean Rapoli. Carlos Rodriquez pitched well for the A’s.

Over all, the Mets are 2-0-1 and are in first place in the Glen Oaks boys’ major division.

McDonalds Royals battle Hunan Cafe Twins

The McDonalds Royals faced the Hunan Cafe Twins at the Oval. It was the McDonald’s Royals first game of the 2003 season, and they played like a team with years of experience instead of the 7- and 8-year-old boys that they really are.

Every player contributed offensively and defensively. Sean Brodersen, Conor Maher, Michael Ciminera, Ryan Perez, James Curran and Javed Khan paced the offense, pounding out run after run. The defensive play of Mark Spano, Paul Benoit, Devon Brenner, Josh Persaud and Christopher Behr was brilliant, with the players making one outstanding play after another and holding the hard-hitting Twins to seven runs.

The final score was 29-7. Brodersen, who was 4-for-4 with six runs batted in, and Spano, who was superb on defense wherever he played on the field, received the game balls for the day. The next game will be against the Rangers on Saturday, April 26, at 8 a.m. at the Oval. Come and support our kids and our league.

Gregs Tire and Auto on a roll

The Gregs Tire and Auto Mets are on a roll with back-to-back victories against the Century 21 Andron Yanks and Marcalla’s Pizza A’s.

The Mets outpitched the Yanks on Monday, April 14, by a score of 3-2, with Tyler Brodney getting the win and Jon Kruczowy the save.

The Yanks also had great pitching by Mike Kaplan and John Rubeneau.

Tommy Clarkson’s fourth-inning double drove in the tying run, and his steal of home was the game-winning run. The game ball was given to Brodney for his outstanding pitching performance.

After the game, Edward Dillon was heard saying that the Yanks have the best coaches he has ever seen.
