St. Robert’s 4th-graders win first game of season

The St. Robert Bellarmine fourth-grade CYO Basketball Team won its first game of the season by defeating Our Lady of the Snows, 17-13, Sunday in Floral Park. Matt Mattone led all scorers with 12 points. Point guard Anthony Scianna and forward Tanner Brand

St. Robert’s led 14-10, but Our Lady of the Snows chipped away to draw within two at 15-13 late in the fourth quarter. That’s when guard Danny Tobin stepped up and hit a big free-throw to give St. Robert’s breathing room, and Mattone’s coast-to-coast layup with under a minute to play sealed the game to hold off a very tough Snows team.

Other members of the St. Robert’s squad coached by Ralph Mattone are: Derek King and Frank Bennett, who both starred on defense along with center Anthony Witchell, who was a demon on backboards doing a great job rebounding in the victory. Taevon Clark is also a member of the squad who has played well this season.
