Whitestone Wanderers sweep L.I. Baymen, beat Bethpage

The 11-year-old Whitestone Wanderers won both games of their doubleheader against the Long Island Baymen Saturday. Mike Lowrey pitched a complete game to get the nod in the first game.

Lowrey was backed by fantastic fielding. In the first inning rightfielder John Massa threw a runner trying to stretch a single out at second base, while leftfiielder Nick Lamonaca made a diving catch in the second. In the fourth, shortstop Vincent Florido made a diving grab and in the fifth, second baseman Johnny Liquori stole two hits away from the Baymen .

Joey Depperman had two RBIs, Brandon Rosenthal, Vincent Florido and George Zorrilla had one RBI each to lead the Wanderers to a 5-1 win .

The second game started with a bang when clean-up hitter Nick Zavattieri hit a two-run homer in the first inning that cleared the 235-foot sign by a good 30 feet.

The Baymen battled back, however, and took a 5-4 lead . The Wanderers tied the game in the fifth inning on singles by Mike Dinoto, Brandon Rosenthal and Tony Zorrilla.

In the sixth inning, George Zorrilla stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and delivered the game-winning hit. The boys added two more runs and won the game 8-5 .

Christopher Moreno and Carlo Cataldo combined to pitch a two-hitter as the 12-year-old Wanderers beat Bethpage, 3-1, in a night game under the lights at Tully Field. Dean Glykas, Rob Liquori and John Massa had hits and third baseman Derek Lamacchia and leftfielder Michael Georgeau made great defensive plays for the Wanderers.
