To The Point: College Point prepares for Memorial Day fun

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. It’s nice to see the neighbors planting flowers and the grass coming out in its good green color.

Sunday, May 25, starting at 2 p.m. will be the College Point Memorial Day Parade in College Point. If you aren’t in the parade, it is important that you, your family and your friends will be observing it. It is important that we honor all our Armed Forces who are defending our country and our people.

The First Reformed Church of College Point, at the corner of 119th Street and 14th Avenue, will be having a flea market Saturday, June 7. The rain date is Saturday, June 14, at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. For information, call 718-939-6579 or 718-463-6099. Vendors are welcome.

The St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus 1463 Seventh Annual Fr. Peter Seeger Golf Tournament will be at the Clearview Golf Course on Friday, June 13. Tee-off time is 7:30 a.m., rain or shine. There will be awards for longest drive, nearest to pin and honest golfer. There is a fee of $95 per person, which includes green fees, golf carts and a hot buffet (immediately following in the St. Ambrose Council’s chambers) with wine and beer. There will also be soda, salad, cake and coffee.

The event is limited to 144 golfers, and the cut-off date for reservations is June 1. No reservations will be made unless accompanied by full payment. The St. Fidelis senior trip will be to Scott’s Oquaga Lake Resort, from June 2 through June 6. A $410 fee includes three meals daily, gratuities and baggage handling. A $50 deposit is due ASAP. For trips and additional information, call Gloria at 718-353-6229.

Poppenhusen events: On Saturday, May 31, there will be a bus trip to Fort Totten and the Historic Officer’s Club. Tickets are $10 and include transportation, entrance fee and tour. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. is the College Point Walking Tour. The tour will be approximately two hours and includes sites of old estates, Strattonport cemetery, St. Paul’s College and more for $6. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the tour. Preregistration is required.

Remembering the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg program will be July 1 through July 3, concert $3. Tickets for both concert and lecture must be obtained in advance.

On Saturday, June 28, at 2 p.m. there will be a free history of the New York City Police Department from the colonial period forward. The speaker will be James Coll.

The Queens Half-Marathon and the Skaggs-Walsh 5K Run will be held Saturday, May 17. The race will start at 121st Street and Poppenhusen Avenue at 8 a.m.

The St. Francis Prep honor roll (90 percent or above) students are Keith Dutton, Mark Dutton, Violetta Matysiak, Laura Prevete, Eric Rooney, Lisa Rooney, Lauren Rutigliano, Marykate Steele, Walter Wrublewski and Erik Zenger.

St. Agnes Academy School, at 13-20 124th St. in College Point, is offering a series of seven high school entrance exam co-op prep classes for girls and boys, beginning Thursday, Sept. 25. For information or an application, please call 718-353-6276, ext. 18.
