Ridgewood woman slashed at her office in Greenpoint

By Dustin Brown

A Polish woman from Ridgewood was slashed in the face and splashed with a noxious liquid Monday by two men who entered and left her Brooklyn office without saying a word, authorities said.

The woman, a 27-year-old secretary named Agata, was treated at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan with at least 30 stitches and released the same day of the assault, said Iwona Kurek, her employer.

The two men entered the office on Driggs Avenue in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn at 10:20 a.m. Monday, slashed Agata in the face and then threw an unknown substance at her, police said.

“They came to the office, they cut her face and they ran from the office. Her face is cut from the ear to the lip,” Kurek said. “They didn't ask about nothing, they just came to her. They didn't even talk.”

Kurek said the police told her the incident may have been gang-related.

“Nobody understands why this happened,” said Kurek, who described Agata as “in shock.”

Kurek asked that Agata's last name not be used because her attackers are still at large.

Agata began working part time as Kurek's secretary only two weeks ago at Nassau Consulting, a business that assists Polish immigrants with legal matters.

Police described the assailants as black men in their late teens or early 20s. One is about 5 feet 9, 150 pounds and was wearing a blue sports jersey and blue pants, while his accomplice is believed to be 5 foot 6 and weigh 140 pounds, police said.

Agata moved to the United States from Poland about two years ago, and she now lives in Ridgewood with two roommates, Kurek said.

Another woman who used to work as Kurek's secretary was also in the office at the time to pick up some belongings.

Kurek said she hopes to raise money to help Agata in her recovery.

“We're trying to organize some help for her if she needs some plastic surgery or something,” Kurek said. “This is a very expensive thing to fix and we will try to organize something. Maybe some people will help us with money.”
