College Round-up: Storm’s Tamulionis, Reid picked up in MLB Draft

St. John’s pitchers Mike Tamulionis and Joe Reid were selected on the second day of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft, June 4.

Tamulionis, a senior righty, was selected in the 31st round by the St. Louis Cardinals, while Reid, a junior hurler, was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 32nd round.

Tamulionis finished his senior season with a 2-2 record in 14 games and posted a team-best 2.11 earned run average. He struck out 20 batters in 21.1 innings and was tied for the team-lead with two saves.

Reid finished his junior season with a 3-3 record and a 3.74 ERA, striking out 68 in 77 innings. In the Big East he was 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 47 innings. He ranked sixth in innings pitched and held conference opponents to a .237 batting average.

SJU Soccer Players Keep Busy

In preparation for the 2003 season, several St. John’s soccer players are playing in the Premier Development League this summer.

Five Red Storm players start for the Brooklyn Knights, based out of the Metropolitan Oval.

Keeper Billy Gaudette has started all seven games for the Knights, leading the team to a 4-2-1 record, good for second place in the Northeast Division.

Chris Wingert, a member of the U.S. Under-23 national team and a favorite for the Hermann Award this season, is a starting center midfielder for Brooklyn and scored a penalty kick goal in a 2-0 win over Vermont May 31.

Starting defender Chris Leidner scored the game-winning goal for the Knights’ in a 4-3 overtime win at Worcester Saturday night. He knocked in Rinaldo Chambers’ deflected corner kick nine minutes into overtime.

Andre Schmid has scored two goals and one assist while Chris Corcoran, who helped lead the Cape Cod Crusaders to the PDL national championship last year, also plays for the Knights.

Keeper Guy Hertz has a 4-2-1 record and leads the league with four shutouts for the South Jersey Barons, currently tied for second place with the Knights.

Midfielder Jeff Carroll is playing for the Chantilly Magic, a club team based in Virginia that will be playing in the regional championship this weekend.
