Glen Oaks L.L.: Burger King Phillies ousted by Merillon, 2-1, in semis

The Glen Oaks Burger King Phillies faced off against Merillon 1 in a semifinal playoff game this week. In an exciting, well-played battle, Merillon prevailed, 2-1. This was only the second time the Phillies lost this season.

Merillon jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring on a fielder’s choice in the top of the third inning. The Phillies continued to play strong defense and battled to finally tie the score at 1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Phillies got their run when Theo Alexandrou doubled and Julia Hannigan followed with a triple.

Merillon came right back and scored a run in the top of the sixth on an infield single to take the lead, 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth the Phillies showed what has made them such a good team all year. The spirit and support shown for each other was tremendous, as the entire team was singing and yelling encouragement for one another. Unfortunately, this was not their day as they came up one run short.

Sara Correa pitched the first three innings, and Rita Romeo closed out the season on the mound. It was a great season for the girls as they grew as a team each game, but in the end the most important thing was they all had a good time.
