Teenagers face pressure to have perfect physique

Body image is one of the most distorted things I have ever had to deal with in my life so far, and it victimizes anyone, at any age.

As a teenager, much pressure is put on us to have the ideal physique. The standards for this ideal physique seem a bit preposterous.

As I see in clubs, cafes and other such places, the size of these girls seems to be shrinking by the minute. With their arms rail-thin, you just feel like going up to them and offering them something to eat.

A handful of them are just naturally skinny, but most go through disturbing feats to match what people say is the ideal body. Some teens commit such acts as anorexia and bulimia, and it’s quite sad what some do to fit this image.

While you are stepping off the scale, have you ever asked yourselves why it is that society puts so much pressure on weight and why so many of our impressions are based solely on our appearances?

Of course, for health reasons everyone should be at the weight that is ideal for their body’s frame, but some people are just so far out of touch with reality that it might be impossible to reel them back in.

As with most other things, there is indeed a double standard. Girls are expected to walk out their doors looking like supermodels, when the guys can be 20 pounds overweight, roll out of bed, put some gel in their hair and probably get twice the number of girls.

It all boils down to confidence. Your inner beauty always shines through; the hard part is allowing it.

If you walk around with your head up and shoulders back it doesn’t matter what you look like — as long as people see you respect yourself and your body, they will have respect for you.

It’s very sad, and at times pathetic, that looks play such a major role in our lives. We need to look past all those distorted images and we will see that the real beauty lies within.

All people have a little diamond shine to them — just give them a chance to let it glisten.
