Stitches tops Whitestone Diner, Lee’s Jewel Box

Bantam Division

In a tightly contested game, Stitches defeated Whitestone Diner 24-22. Steve Foley led Stitches in scoring with help from Derek Capponi and Logan Frankel. Dave Legaz and Vinay Chodha played very hard at the guard position. Daniel Acevedo also contributed for the Stitches team. Vinny Depperman excelled with tenacious play for the Whitestone Diner team.

In an entertaining game, Stitches won its third game in a row defeating Lee’s Jewel Box by 9 points. Frankel and Foley played exceptionally well for the red hot Stitches team. Chodha and Legaz were terrific in playing a tight defense from the guard position.

Derek Capponi, Stitches center, rebounded and blocked the middle continuously. George Tsiklidis, Daniel Arevelo and Paul Tsenesides also contributed to the victory. Benny Tockershewsky played his usual strong game for Lee’s.

JAM Service Company continued to play good team basketball in defeating Franklin’s Printing, 25-10. Kenny Lehr led the scoring with 10 points as he rebounded well and did a nice job of converting baskets off the offensive boards for JAM.

Patrick Berndt had 8 points on several streaking fast-break baskets and also did a great job of controlling the boards for JAM. David Hazim had 5 points, hitting a couple of nice jump shots, and Sal DiMaria had a big second-half basket for his squad. Mike Gallagher continued his excellent defense as he again came up with critical steals for JAM. Franklin’s was led by Jeffrey Johnston with 5 points and the hustling play of Steven McGrory.

Major Division

In a Major Division battle, Marble Mode defeated Whitestone Hardware, 54-37. The Marble Mode team has played excellent of late, led by the excellent guard play of Dave Martin and the strong rebounding of “Smokin” Joe Montgomery and Anthony Kapovic.

Zach Frankel played his usual consistent good basketball and Coach Frankel was extremely pleased by the improvement of Marble Mode’s guard Ralphus Glavan. Marble Mode is now 4-1 for the season.

Nothing has come easy for Varsi Deli this year, and last week was no different as it took overtime to defeat Marble Mode, 45-40. It was a close game throughout until early in the fourth quarter when Varsi had a nice run to open a 9-point lead. Marble Mode came back, however, and took a 1-point lead in the last two minutes.

Both teams had opportunities to win in the final seconds, but the game went to overtime. In the extra period, Varsi had big baskets from Keith Caperelli and John Kiely and a critical free throw by Jose Barcena. Varsi was led by Barcena and Caperelli, who had 17 points and 16 points, respectively, with Kiely contributing 8. Marble Mode played an excellent game and was led by Kapovic and Martin.

In an exciting game that went into overtime, Graham Restoration beat Cherry Valley, 51-48. Scoring up until the last seconds of the game were Tommy Franceschini, who had 14 points; Joey Graham, scoring 12 points; Erhan Sencer, with 12 points; and Philip Leist, with 9 points. Great defense was played by Mike Gambino, who also scored 2 points; Paul Roedell, who scored 2 points; and George Fahim and Wesley Cuevas. For Cherry Valley, Ed Johnston played a great game as well as Danny Munoz, Justin Finkelman and James Tierney.

Minor Division

It was a major clash in the Minor Division as Optometrics Eye Wear outlasted Duffner & Voight. In victory, Optometrics was led by Mike Giacchio, Mike Conklin and Tommy Monte. Joe Burke, a new addition to Optometrics, led the way with several fast-break baskets and tough defense. Alexander Chateau and Kevin Conklin used their speed and hustle on defense, and Chris Kekowski’s playmaking and leadership was the difference in the win. Duffner was lead by Hilal Picorsky, Joe Kurtz, Mike Jensen and Glenn Barker.

Girls’ A Division

In a game that was ruled by defense on both sides, Berardi held onto a 1-point lead in the final minute of play to defeat Metro, 8-7. Chrissy Kuzniewski (4), Christine Golea (2) and Harriet Shevis (2) led the scoring for Berardi, while Alina Durkovic, Christina Trezza and Carmen Mateo contributed with their great defense. Kimberly Simon, Stephanie Camilleri and Tanya Kozakis led Metro with their team play and hustle.

In a fun-filled and exciting game that showed some excellent examples of sportsmanship by both teams, Whitehouse Restaurant beat Graziano’s Ravioli & Catering, 23-15. Scoring for Whitehouse was Corinne Lippert with 15 points, Theresa Schwenk with 6 points and Brittany Famighetti with 2 points. For Graziano’s, scoring was done by Amanda Bell with 8 points, Nicole Naposki with 4 points, Alexis Tchaconas with 2 points and Manuela Uribe with 1 point.
