To The Point: Avella takes up civic’s cause in College Point

By Sabina Cardali

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point.

As a result of the College Point Civic/Taxpayers Association meeting in June, Councilman Tony Avella (D-Bayside) wrote a letter on our behalf to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. We are requesting that the auxiliary library trailer in the College Point Park be used as an auxiliary police station when the library is completed. The northeast Queens communities need this police presence and protection.

Events at MacNeil Park: On Sunday at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert. The Something Special Orchestra will perform the ever-popular sounds of the big bands. Every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. there will be something for the kids, such as puppet shows and other children’s shows.

There will be a dog show and ice-cream social Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the First Reformed Church.

We all could use a refresher: There will be a safe driver’s course Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This class will allow you to save 10 percent annually for three years on collision and liability insurance premiums. It will also reduce up to four points of accumulated moving violations. The cost is $45. Register by calling the St. Fidelis rectory at 718-445-6164.

Poppenhusen Institute on Sept. 11 will be hosting a “Remembrance Concert” in the Victorian room. The program will include words of hope and light from our local clergy, songs of inspiration and a piano/violin concert by Hannah HSU Wang and Edward Polidi.

Sabina says… It’s wonderful having our family here from Las Vegas.
