Teen Talk: First paycheck: Milestone on the road to adulthood

By Kohar Bayizian

Most have heard the phrase “Money can’t buy happiness.” But not many have heard the response to this statement: “Whoever said that just doesn’t know where to shop.”

Which brings me to the fact that some people think that money is what makes the world go around. And we are at a point in our lives where we either feed into this philosophy or stray away from it.

Most of us are earning money for the first time, be it at the local candy store, baby-sitting or at a fast food restaurant. We now possess money that we can use our own discretion.

And the whole concept of having this freedom is enticing at any age.

The freedom of having your own money is one of the many first experiences we will have on this bumpy ride to adulthood. But the lessons that we will learn and the decisions that we will have to make by having such a responsibility will shape the lives of the people we are to become.

After you have been put on a payroll and are out there in the world having to reach your hand in our own pocket for the first time, you should come to a few realizations.

Your whole perception and the value you put on money will be completely altered. We will be spending money differently. One day, you’ll catch yourself on the line at some store looking at a leather jacket and you’ll say to yourself: “Wow, this jacket is almost a week’s pay” and this fact alone will make you walk out of that store empty-handed.

You begin to see what things really cost. And believe me it’s not that cheap!

You will understand the worth of your time and of the money you make and how much of your time is worth making money.

Sometimes the things we spend money on don’t justify the time we spent making it. Time is a priceless thing. You can never get it back. And that’s why we should use our time wisely.

Part of the pleasure of making money is giving back to the people we love. You should buy that CD your younger brother has been talking about or that tool your father always wanted. Sharing your prosperity, in this case money, brings joy to other people. And it should also be brought to you.
