The Queens College Women and Work Program will hold open houses at the college’s Manhattan Extension Center on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m., and in the Music Building on Queens College’s Flushing campus on Friday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m.
The Women and Work Program is an innovative life and job skills training program offered free to women with a high school diploma or those working towards the GED who lack the necessary skills to reenter the workforce. It was developed specifically to help women from backgrounds of financial and/or emotional hardship, including victims of domestic violence.
In addition to teaching computer skills, vocabulary development, and offering humanities study, the 15-week program also addresses issues such as time management, childcare needs, personal development, interpersonal skills and conflict resolution. The Women and Work Program’s “Clothing Closet” also provides free professional attire for the participants. From the selection process through graduation day, the program replicates the workplace environment and combines virtual on-the-job-training with a supportive but challenging group process.
Attendance at one of the free open houses is required for women who wish to apply to the program. Each open house begins promptly at 10 a.m. and the application process lasts approximately five hours, so attendees should bring a brown bag lunch.
Queens College is located at 65-30 Kissena Boulevard in Flushing, and the College’s Manhattan Extension Center is at 25 West 43rd Street, 18th Floor.
